Electronic Lab Notebook

An electronic lab notebook scientists actually want to use

Capture experiments the way scientists think, with the structure your organization needs to search, reuse and defend that work later.

Overview

Notebooks that become knowledge, not archives

Paper notebooks and generic document tools trap valuable work in pages nobody can search. Many first-generation ELNs swung the other way and forced rigid forms on creative research.

HDLIMS ELN lets each entry mix free-form narrative with structured tables, materials and results. Because it shares one data model with the LIMS, inventory and SDMS, the reagents you use, the samples you create and the data you generate stay connected, from first experiment through method transfer and routine QC.

What changes for your lab

Less time documenting

Templates, linked inventory and instrument data reduce the manual writing that takes scientists away from the bench.

Reusable institutional knowledge

Structured, searchable records keep know-how available when people move on.

Smoother tech transfer

Methods and materials defined in development carry straight into the LIMS and LES for routine use.

Capabilities

Core ELN capabilities

Flexible and structured entries

Combine rich text, tables, images and attachments with structured data blocks that remain searchable and reportable.

Templates and protocols

Standardize recurring experiments with templates that pre-populate steps, materials and calculations.

Inventory-linked materials

Reference reagent lots, cell lines and samples directly from inventory, with automatic consumption and genealogy.

Collaboration and review

Share projects, comment in context, request witnessing and sign entries electronically with defined meanings.

Search and reuse

Find prior experiments by material, parameter, result or author, and clone them as a starting point.

Handoff to testing

Submit samples for analytical testing from the notebook and receive results back into the entry, without re-keying.

Structured from the start

Capture data you can analyze later

Structured blocks for parameters, observations and results turn notebook pages into a queryable data set, without forcing every entry into a rigid form.

  • Reusable data blocks for common parameters and results
  • Unit-aware calculations with full traceability of inputs
  • Cross-experiment comparison of conditions and outcomes
  • Export to analytics tools through open APIs

IP and compliance

Records that hold up in patent disputes and audits

Every entry is versioned, time-stamped and attributable. Signing and witnessing workflows produce a defensible record of conception and reduction to practice.

  • Configurable author signature and witness workflows
  • Locked, signed versions with complete revision history
  • GxP mode with 21 CFR Part 11 controls for regulated development work
  • Long-term readable export formats for records retention

FAQ

ELN: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an ELN and a LIMS?
An ELN documents experiments and the reasoning behind them, typically in research and development. A LIMS manages structured, repeatable sample testing workflows. HDLIMS delivers both on one platform so data moves between them without re-entry.
Can HDLIMS ELN be used in GxP environments?
Yes. Projects can run in a GxP mode that enforces 21 CFR Part 11 and EU Annex 11 controls such as mandatory electronic signatures, reason-for-change prompts and locked records.
Can we migrate existing notebooks into HDLIMS?
Yes. Historical entries can be imported as read-only records with their original metadata, and structured data can be mapped into HDLIMS data blocks where it adds value. Our migration team can scope this with you.
